Though I love the freedom and creativity of illustration, portraits are a great way to flex those technical muscles. Exact representations are extremely difficult and take a lot of patience, not to mention a great reference/references. I prefer to use colored pencils or watercolor for portrait work. These mediums allow for a great amount of subtle layering that help bring the images to life.
